Research Officer (Broadacre and Horticulture)


Locations: South Australia

Research is conducted in the broadacre, viticultural and horticultural industries.

As a result of continuing growth in the business, we are seeking to appoint a Research Officer in each of Horticulture and Broadacre. The Research Officer is a functional and leadership role within our existing research teams, and is one which will assist in the efficient planning, conduct and reporting of our applied research programs.

The Research Officer is responsible for: establishing and continuing to manage effective relationships with a range of stakeholders; ensuring reporting staff remain fully engaged; trial operations are conducted efficiently and with adequate resources; and, utilising their technical skills and understanding, contribute to the production of scientific outcomes of the highest standard and rigour. The Research Officer may also be required to supervise and, where appropriate, provide leadership to members of our technical team and casual staff.

As directed by the Broadacre or Horticulture Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Demonstrate technical and behavioural leadership for AgXtra staff, with a capacity to lead, guide and motivate team members.
  • Assist the relevant Segment Manager in ensuring the team is technically competent. 
  • Provide leadership in the planning, coordination and conduct of research activities.
  • Liaise closely with AgXtra staff to ensure the team understands the client’s needs, and delivers on their objectives.
  • Manage and participate in the establishment and assessment of field and protected cropping trials according to protocols.
  • Manage and participate in the timely preparation of scientific reports for the research, development and promotional needs of clients.
  • Advise and assist staff on technical and scientific aspects of their roles.
  • Participate in the development and communication of AgXtra strategic objectives.
  • Promote the business to staff, clients, the industry and the broader community, whilst adhering to AgXtra’ core values and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain a good rapport and professional working relationship with client and agricultural industry representatives, collaborating researchers and AgXtra team members.
  • Prioritise self development, and contribute to the development of others in your team.

  • A good understanding of field crop agronomy and crop production systems.

Technical Assistant


Locations: South Australia

AgXtra is a leading private agricultural research provider servicing South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, with its head office located at Newton in South Australia.  Established in 2003, AgXtra focuses on the evaluation of new and emerging crop production technology and product development, in the form of applied research trials, plant breeding trials, and research project management. Over the past 18 years the business has established an enviable reputation for its strong and supportive workplace culture, and its focus on delivering quality outcomes in a safe working environment. Research is conducted in the broadacre, viticultural and horticultural industries.

As a result of continuing growth in the business, we are seeking to appoint 2-3 Technical Assistants to the South Australian office. Technical Assistants provide a functional role within our existing research team and is one which will assist in the daily field and lab tasks of both our horticulture and broadacre units.

Technical Assistants have an influential role in achieving quality standards and operational benchmarks for the work assigned, as well as for the maintenance of grower relationships. Technical Assistants may also be required to supervise casual staff during field and lab operations.

As directed by Research Officers and/or the Unit Manager, your responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in the daily field/lab research activities in key regions throughout South Australia.
  • Assist in the delivery of high-quality data for the research, selection and promotional needs of clients.
  • Assist in the establishment, monitoring and maintenance of field trials, and the collection of trial data.
  • Maintain field records, field equipment and other company resources.
  • Contribute to ongoing compliance with relevant legislation and company standards. 
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with growers, industry representatives and the AgXtra team.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of AgXtra’s operating systems and procedures.
  • Undertake ongoing training to continually enhance skills and competencies.

  • An understanding of field crop agronomy and crop production systems.

  • Planning and organising capabilities.
  • Ability to participate and contribute to team objectives.
  • A current Drivers License.
